“The sun is burning us, there is no solution except Allah.”
The sentence of Ahlam’s father, the seventy-year-old man , was very painful… His despair had ended and he was left as an old man waiting for the time to leave.
Ahlam’s father, or “Abu Ahlam” as he likes to be called, lives with his widowed daughter and her five children in one tent that does not protect them from the heat of the sun or heavy rains, a place that does not have the lowest standards for human life.
Abu Ahlam cannot work due to his illness, and relies on his daughter to provide the family’s needs, bringing water from a far place from their tent site. Her first concern was her dignity and the dignity of her children and father. She is a strong woman and wants her children to be strong like her. While her caring father instilled her with self-confidence and the meaning of self-esteem from a young age.
“Life is hard, but i wish for a better future for my children”
Ahlam, a daughter in Hudaydah Governorate, hopes for a better life that she was unable to obtain. She anticipates the unknown future that awaits her children. After suffering for more than eight years of conflict and war in Yemen, including the death of her husband, Ahlam believed until recently that things could not get worse.
“This house is bigger than what I dreamt of… I was dreaming of a cave or a big tent for me and my children.”
From the heart of hardships and crises, a ray of light is born, a ray of hope that we cling to, and her simple dream was that light, a house that would shelter her and her children was a “dream” haven to meet her needs, and her sick father.
Ahlam achieved stability for herself, and her whole family; she received a complete housing unit within the UHF housing project, built on a solid foundation to face all climatic conditions. The housing unit consists of two rooms, a bathroom, a kitchen, and a large yard.. a complete house for a decent life.
In 2023, we paid them a visit to check on her. Ahlam had made many changes and planted a mint plant in the house’s garden (yard). Her features changed, and we were happy to talk to her about her new life after receiving her home.
Ahlam’s humble ambition granted her more than she expected…but our ambition to provide shelter for more people still exists and we are working on it to complete the construction of 75 new housing units within the UHF housing project during the year 2023.
